The Hindu push-up is a flowing push-up that travels from a downward dog position, dives forward and low to the floor, then sweeps up into an arched chest position before reversing back. It trains pushing strength through a long range while opening the shoulders, hips and spine. It suits anyone comfortable with standard push-ups who wants a push that also moves the body through positions rather than staying in one plane.

Form

How to do hindu push-ups

  1. 1Start in a downward dog: hands flat and shoulder width, feet a little wider than your hips, hips high, heels pressing toward the floor and head between your arms.
  2. 2Bend your elbows and dive your chest forward and down, skimming close to the floor as your hips drop, inhaling as you travel.
  3. 3Straighten your arms as your hips sink, letting your chest lift and your head come up so your back arches gently and your thighs approach the floor.
  4. 4Exhale and reverse the path: press the floor away, lift your hips back and up, and return your head between your arms to the starting dog position.
  5. 5Keep the movement continuous and smooth, and keep your hands planted in the same spot throughout the effort.

Watch for

Common mistakes

  • Hinging straight up and down instead of travelling forward, which turns the movement into a short pike push-up.

Fix: Think of sliding your chest along the floor toward your hands and past them before you let your hips drop.

  • Forcing a hard low back arch at the top of the sweep.

Fix: Lift only as far as feels easy, keep your glutes relaxed but your ribs stacked, and let the chest do the opening.

  • Rushing so the low position is skipped and the elbows never bend much.

Fix: Slow the dive down, let your elbows travel back past your ribs, and pause briefly at the lowest point of each pass.
